Mathematical modeling is “the process of choosing and using appropriate mathematics and statistics to analyze empirical situations, to understand them better, and to improve decisions” (Idaho Content Standards: Mathematics, 2022). Mathematical modeling is important for real-life applications—in engineering, business, the social sciences, climate study, advanced design, and more—and within mathematics education itself.

Modeling mathematics often involves the students’ use of concrete objects, manipulatives, graphing tools, and other technology. The use of these models has been shown to have a positive impact on students’ mathematics learning.

Mathematical modeling and modeling mathematics are not the same. Unfortunately, the same root word of “model” appears in two distinct constructs in mathematics education and “model” is defined in at least 8 distinct ways.

During this session participants will explore the meanings of Mathematical Modeling and Modeling Mathematics in high school curriculum and consider mathematical modeling tasks used as a vehicle for STEM learning.

We know that many of our early-grades students and teachers delight in a great picture book or an intriguing game. In this session we explore options for early-grades teachers in connecting mathematical concepts to picture books and games in the classroom. This cross-curricular lesson structure allows us to immerse students in picture books, often used in literacy or history instruction, while simultaneously fascinating them with mathematics. In this session, we will explore examples of picture books and games that are already being used to increase student engagement in Idaho K-3 classrooms and consider other resources not yet in use. We will continue this exploration with a roundtable discussion about the use of picture books, as well as games, in the math classroom and how we can help our students deeply engage in both the grade-level content standards as well as the Standards for Mathematical Practice.

The TMC Works program enlists early-career STEM-curious individuals to plan, prepare and lead hands-on, inquiry-based STEM activities with young children. In doing so, participants develop STEM and workplace skills necessary to succeed in the jobs and careers they ultimately pursure. Program participants work with mentors who train and coach them through their development, who develop superior supervisory skills in the process. TMC Works program sites benefit by increasing their STEM programing offerings and improving the quality of their programs. Throughout the process, participants gain exposure to STEM careers in Idaho, which will ultimately lead to more skilled candidates entering the workforce.

Do your students enjoy playing digital math games? If so, did you know that most digital math games focus more on speed and memorization, then on deep conceptual understanding? This means that we, as educators, need to critically evaluate and examine how digital math games support students’ mathematics understanding. In this presentation, we will first identify the difference between gamified and game-based learning to better understand the types of games we use in our classrooms. Then, we will learn about key design features in digital math games that have been reported to support students’ mathematics understanding. In many cases, data and statistics standards are the first to be sidelined when time is tight. But what if we could teach these concepts seamlessly alongside functions? Using tasks that connect these standards is a powerful way to meet curricular goals, engage students in real-world math, and make mathematical modeling a regular part of learning. For instance, tracking the spread of a viral outbreak can demonstrate exponential (and logarithmic) functions while teaching statistical concepts like rate of change and trends over time. How do we help students “see” data in their everyday world? In a topics course for future middle and secondary school math teachers, we explore data through a classroom project inspired by Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec’s Dear Data project, which is also a project in the YouCubed Data Science curriculum. Along with two students who were in the course, we will provide the entire project, sample student work, and ideas for continuing this fun data exploration with students. We will finish by providing an opportunity for participants to begin creating their own data postcard that they will, hopefully, be willing to mail to another ICTM member.
