Principles to Action: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All (NCTM 2014, p.24) states, “Effective teaching of mathematics engages students in making connections among mathematical representation to deepen understanding of mathematics concepts and procedures and as tools for problem solving.”
Participants in this session will practice connecting visual, numeric, symbolic, and verbal representations as a lesson planning tool. A simple graphic organizer helps math teachers think about appropriate mathematical representations for math concepts they regularly teach and how to guide their students in making connections among these representations.
