A structured approach to problem-based learning balances explicit instruction and inquiry-based learning. To allow access for all students, we need to open up school mathematics beyond the heavy focus on computation and overreliance on direct instruction. Students can develop critical thinking skills, collaborative abilities, and a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts by emphasizing authentic sense-making and discourse.
