Telling the Story: Engaging Students in the Process of Science with Science Communication Lab (SCL) Short Films

The Science Communication Lab (SCL) is a non-profit organization of scientists and filmmakers collaborating to build a more scientifically engaged society. SCL has produced high quality, award-winning documentaries, such as "Human Nature" about the CRISPR revolution, and short films featuring scientists sharing their stories, such as Hawaiian microbiologist Kiana Frank, DNA pioneers Matt Meselson and Frank Stahl, and Cold Spring Harbor's Evelyn Witkin. Join SCL Teacher-Ambassador and AP Biology teacher Dan Vanden Heuvel to learn more about their films (and watch one!), share ideas for teaching the nature of science using SCL short films, and see new curriculum resources available to secondary educators.

Dan Vanden Heuvel is a Biology and AP Biology teacher at Wood River High School in Hailey, ID and a Teacher-Ambassador for the Science Communication Lab in Berkeley, CA (https://sciencecommunicationlab.org). He holds Bachelors degrees in English and Conservation Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master of Educational Technology from Boise State University.
