Creating Virtual Spaces for STEM Skills
Wednesday July 30, 2025 10:45am - 11:45am MDT
STEM skills are pertinent to every industry. However, many students do not have access to physical hands-on skill development. The demand for these skills is exploding, and Idaho students need to prepare to meet future workforce demands. Learn about creating interactive STEM experiences for your students utilizing, often free, computer technology. Encourage students to become curious and develop critical thinking skills in a way they consider “fun.” Topics will include mapping to STEM objectives, creating lesson plans, and finding technology options.

Lessons Learned and Successes Earned in a STEM Workforce Development Afterschool Program
Wednesday July 30, 2025 1:00pm - 2:00pm MDT
The TMC Works program enlists early-career STEM-curious individuals to plan, prepare and lead hands-on, inquiry-based STEM activities with young children.  In doing so, participants develop STEM and workplace skills necessary to succeed in the jobs and careers they ultimately pursure.  Program participants work with mentors who train and coach them through their development, who develop superior supervisory skills in the process.  TMC Works program sites benefit by increasing their STEM programing offerings and improving the quality of their programs.  Throughout the process, participants gain exposure to STEM careers in Idaho, which will ultimately lead to more skilled candidates entering the workforce.

In this presentation, learn about the successes and challenges faced in this innovative workforce development program.  Hear about their experience from program participants themselves, and behind-the-scenes details from the program coordinators on training, evaluation and site support.

Biomimicry & Computer Science – How Nature is Informing the Future of Algorithms, AI, and More
Wednesday July 30, 2025 1:00pm - 2:00pm MDT
Question: How can nature’s problem-solving strategies help students understand and innovate in computer science?

Description:
How can nature’s genius help students understand the future of technology? This workshop explores how biomimicry—the practice of learning from nature’s time-tested solutions—can inspire new ways of thinking about innovation, problem-solving, and the rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Through compelling examples—like how swarm behavior has influenced robotics or how neural networks draw inspiration from biological systems—educators will discover how nature’s adaptive strategies provide a powerful framework for engaging students in STEM. We’ll discuss how ecosystems solve challenges through decentralized intelligence, resilience, and efficiency, and how these lessons can help students think critically about the world they will shape.

By the end, educators will walk away with practical strategies and hands-on lesson ideas that make STEM more relatable, engaging, and future-ready—showing students that nature itself is the original engineer, designer, and problem solver.

Game On: Evaluating Digital Math Games for Elementary Mathematics
Wednesday July 30, 2025 2:15pm - 3:15pm MDT
Do your students enjoy playing digital math games? If so, did you know that most digital math games focus more on speed and memorization, then on deep conceptual understanding? This means that we, as educators, need to critically evaluate and examine how digital math games support students’ mathematics understanding. In this presentation, we will first identify the difference between gamified and game-based learning to better understand the types of games we use in our classrooms. Then, we will learn about key design features in digital math games that have been reported to support students’ mathematics understanding. Finally, we will use our computers to evaluate online digital math games based on these features and discuss the educational value of the digital math games. You’ll leave this session with practical tips for evaluating digital math games, plus some great game suggestions to start using them in your classroom.

Postcards That Bring Data to Life
Wednesday July 30, 2025 3:30pm - 4:30pm MDT
How do we help students “see” data in their everyday world? In a topics course for future middle and secondary school math teachers, we explore data through a classroom project inspired by Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec’s Dear Data project, which is also a project in the YouCubed Data Science curriculum. Along with two students who were in the course, we will provide the entire project, sample student work, and ideas for continuing this fun data exploration with students. We will finish by providing an opportunity for participants to begin creating their own data postcard that they will, hopefully, be willing to mail to another ICTM member. Let’s start our own ICTM data postcard celebration! Join us to explore how you can bring data to life for your students too.
