Science and Literacy Integration: The Science Classroom Meets the Science of Reading
Wednesday July 30, 2025 10:45am - 11:45am MDT
Today’s teacher has a multitude to accomplish each day. How do we fit it all in? In this session, we share how using rich, inquiry-based learning will not only build science knowledge but also the skills needed to increase language comprehension.

We build on principles from the language comprehension side of Scarborough’s Reading Rope as we introduce, explore, and make sense of science concepts in today’s classroom. Learn how three-dimensional science teaching and learning provides meaningful context to develop language comprehension. A lesson from the FOSS program will be used to provide context for our learning.

Games and Picture Books in the Math Classroom!
Wednesday July 30, 2025 1:00pm - 2:00pm MDT
We know that many of our early-grades students and teachers delight in a great picture book or an intriguing game. In this session we explore options for early-grades teachers in connecting mathematical concepts to picture books and games in the classroom. This cross-curricular lesson structure allows us to immerse students in picture books, often used in literacy or history instruction, while simultaneously fascinating  them with mathematics. In this session, we will explore examples of picture books and games that are already being used to increase student engagement in Idaho K-3 classrooms and consider other resources not yet in use. We will continue this exploration with a roundtable discussion about the use of picture books, as well as games, in the math classroom and how we can help our students deeply engage in both the grade-level content standards as well as the Standards for Mathematical Practice.

Sensemaking and Elementary Science: That Just Makes Sense!
Wednesday July 30, 2025 1:00pm - 2:00pm MDT
A critical component of any science lesson is the opportunity for students to make sense of their experiences and connect back to the critical knowledge and standards of learning. How do we make the TIME for this to happen? We purposefully plan and implement it as part of the lesson cycle. Join us as we learn more about this meaningful and engaging process called sensemaking. A lesson from the FOSS program will be used to provide context for our learning.

Breaking Down Barriers: a discussion on partnerships between formal and informal STEM Educators
Wednesday July 30, 2025 2:15pm - 3:15pm MDT
In this session we will explore how to strengthen relationships between formal K-12 educators and informal community educators. We will discuss the benefits of these kinds of collaboration and partnerships. We will also discuss barriers to these partnerships and begin exploring how to address and overcome those barriers.  This session will hopefully be the first step in a larger discussion that will carry on beyond this conference.

Using Language and Literacy Strategies to Enrich Science Teaching
Wednesday July 30, 2025 2:15pm - 3:15pm MDT
How do we effectively teach science content when our students are still learning the vocabulary and language of science?  Natalie Wexler explains in Beyond the Science of Reading  (2025) that background knowledge is an essential element of the Science of Reading and that the vocabulary and language of academic content must be explicitly taught.  This class will explore strategies from dual-immersion and language acquisition research to discuss how to connect literacy to science content and immerse learners in the language of science.  Although the activities will be based in science content, many of the strategies will be applicable to other content as well.

Bot Builders: Creating Interactive Learning Environments with Tech
Wednesday July 30, 2025 2:15pm - 3:15pm MDT
Teaching curriculum standards while incorporating technology can be overwhelming. This session demonstrates how to bridge the gap between traditional curriculum and technology using engaging tools like Ozobots, Bee-Bots, micro:bits, and Scratch. These tools offer hands-on coding experiences that align with K-5 curriculum standards, fostering creativity and critical thinking. Attendees will explore practical strategies to integrate these technologies into their classrooms, enhance student engagement and support the development of 21st-century skills. By the end of the session, teachers will be ready to seamlessly incorporate coding and technology into their lessons.
